Uncle Sam and You will immerse students in a full year of learning about civics and government. Designed for students in grades 5-8, lessons focus on America's founding documents, branches of government, patriotic symbols, voting, the election process, Washington, D.C., the presidency, how Congress works, American holidays, and aspects of federal, state, and local government. Each full-color lesson includes a short chapter to read that explains the topic to the student; chapters feature both modern and historical photographs and illustrations. Lessons conclude with a variety of subject-based activity ideas that relate to Biblical studies, literature, creative writing, art, vocabulary, reading assignments, and notes for the sold-separately (and optional) student workbook/lesson review. A weekly family activity that involves crafts, meals, and other multi-age activities is also provided. Fifteen units are included each text, with four lessons in each unit. Depending on how many activities are assigned, students will need 45-90 minutes per lesson. However, the back of each book includes fifteen optional lessons on America's patriotic holidays. If five lessons per week are desired, the holiday lessons can be used as a fifth lesson or for other occasions. A total of 150 lessons/30 weeks of lessons are provided.

Being an election year, we decided this would be a good choice for our 8th grader to learn about civics and government and so far we've been very satisfied with this curriculum. This is our second year (and 3rd curricula) using Notgrass and I highly recommend this company and these products. The material is easy to use and I love the biblical worldview. I plan on sticking with Notgrass history curriculum all through high school!

My kids love all of their products and so do I. They are easy to use, have beautiful pictures, and tell the truth about history from His Story. This would be great to do in an election year, like now. But we did it last year. However, doing it and also studying the constitution too just before the election cycle started, my kids have really gotten a lot out of our discussions about this election. They can both speak intelligently about what's right and wrong about what politicians say and do or don't say and don't do. It's been fun to watch them be so frustrated with the candidates and the fact that they aren't old enough to vote yet. Thank you Notgrass and Uncle Sam and You for giving my kids a love for our country and a desire to see the right candidate become our next president. My kids can't get enough of your history books. Please keep writing more. I am hoping Geography is still in the plans for the very near future!

After, a considerable amount of reviewing hm history curriculum, I found little out there that offered what I was looking for. UNTIL....Uncle Sam and You! Amazing and extremely well laid out. Packed with historical info that has captivated my son and peeked his interest! My son has even been known to call his Grandpa and share the days lesson with him especially when its something of my Dad'S day. It bonds their relationship and they both look forward to future lessons. Also, my son never before has had a desire to do much in the way of writing. However, the activities at the end of each lesson have been so well chosen that he often looks ahead with excitement to see what he will be writing or looking up in the Bible. One of my favorite things about Uncle Sam is how it covers so many other subjects at the same time. Most important to me is that this curriculum is God glorifying and that is the #1 reason for my choosing it! Thank You Notgrass, for all of your diligent work to provide an excellent , top-notch curriculum that sings quality! You have blessed our family greatly!
With Much Appreciation,
Tammy

As a previous 3rd grade teacher I loved this curriculum. The map and timeline books were great. I always feel like geography is missing in a lot of history curriculum but not with this unit. The lesson were super easy to follow and loved the illustrations. I highly recommend this along with Uncle Sam and From Adam to Us. I have used all of the Notgrass curriculum including World History for HS. LOVE!!!

Besides the great Christian world view content, which made me feel secure in letting him read on his own, it was the format I enjoyed. Each chapter is a short enough bite, he was able to read and do the work without my assistance, which not only helped him feel more independent, but encouraged that behavior. I would just let him know which of the activities I wanted him to accomplish that day and he was off. The questions in the review were enough to let me know he actually read it : ), without bogging him down and making the subject dreary. My only complaint was I would have liked a few more books to read, with questions. But, I just found bookadventure.com, so that need is filled. I can give him a couple more, and higher level readers, to go along with the material. Another thing I like about the flow of Notgrass, is that there is room for our own deviation and exploration. Other programs are so full, you can't add on as your own interests percolate. I intend to use Notgrass the rest of his schooling - until college.

In my own school years, history was sorely lacking. I knew I needed to find something that could not only teach my children but also me about how our government worked and was originally intended to work. Uncle Sam and You does! I was able to set it up as a largely independent project for my studious 5th grader who can do the lessons herself. Thanks to the hundreds of pictures included, reading the text is enjoyable and very informative. I'm learning a lot that I never knew before! I chose different parts of each of the student workbooks for my daughter to complete, and the Holiday study in the back gives her enough creative leeway that she doesn't fuss over the more basic answering questions and checking retention parts. I recommend this curriculum to all my friends who are looking for a civics or government curriculum, just in time for the 2016 elections.

Great History, explores the parts of government. It is not boring textbook style, it is very conversational. Great pictures. Fun projects, great bible activities, and the literature We used in last half of 8th grade and into 9th grade. We have used other Notgrass Histories and will Continue through Highschool. I would recommend to all. It is grounded and through out its content incorporates a Christian Worldview.
