Biblical Parenting: Technology Wellness at Home

Technology Wellness at Home, a Conversation between Trish Corlew and Dr. Scott Turansky

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re the only parent struggling to set healthy boundaries around screens, social media, and gaming—you’re not. In this podcast conversation, I’m joined by Dr. Scott Turansky, and we talk honestly about the challenges families are facing in today’s digital world. In discussing technology wellness in the home, we delve into topics like:

  • Why kids often feel pressure to be “on call” to their friends 24/7.
  • How gaming and scrolling can quietly take over family life.
  • Why boundaries actually help kids feel safe (even when they resist them).
  • And most importantly—how to shift from simply saying no to technology into guiding our kids toward discernment, wisdom, and spiritual maturity.

This is a conversation full of encouragement for parents who don’t want to just survive the digital age but want to use it as an opportunity to disciple their children and help them grow into thoughtful, Christ-centered adults.

We share some stories from our personal experiences and discuss practical tips such as developing a Family Technology Plan. This conversation is a helpful resource for any parents navigating the challenges and questions of how much technology and screen time you should allow your kids (and teens) to have in the home.

A few highlights of our technology wellness conversation:

So many parents are struggling with technology, across the board: smartphones, YouTube, social media, gaming, communication with their friends, and even online shopping. Electronics permeate our culture and our families. And we need to draw a distinction between unhealthy electronics and healthy electronics.

In our conversation, we discuss the importance of a balanced approach to electronics, as well as drawing a distinction between consumption and education, or even fun, in the realm of technology. There is electronic entertainment that we can enjoy, but it shouldn’t be everything we’re doing. It shouldn’t encompass social relationships to where everything a child does is on their screens, including their friendships.

Part of our role as parents is to train our children for life, which requires correction, guidance, and sometimes putting limits on things that they don’t like. Technology is one of those areas where we need to develop a conviction about what’s healthy for our family.

In this conversation, we get practical on how to manage devices and encourage technology wellness in the home via a Family Technology Plan. In which a family develops a set of guidelines that everyone in the family understands and agrees to about things like:

  • Where do we keep devices at night?
  • What times of day are off-limits for screens?
  • What types of apps or websites are allowed?
  • What’s the process for getting permission to download something new?

We also discuss social media, gaming, and ways to monitor and maintain good habits such as taking breaks, setting timers, and having tech-free days.
