Tackling Math Worries (A Homeschool Conversation)

Math panic is real, y’all. Every homeschool mom I know has wrestled with the same math worries and asked themselves these questions at some point: Am I doing enough? Am I teaching it right? What if my child is behind?

Whether you’re starting fresh with your first kindergartener or you’ve been homeschooling for a decade, those math worries creep in every year. And honestly? They can take the joy out of learning if we let them.

That’s why I sat down with Nadim al Rahim from CTCMath for another installment of our Homeschool Conversations podcast. We talked about the math worries that come up again and again—and how to replace that anxiety with confidence and progress.

Here’s a little taste of our conversation:

  • On the dreaded word “behind”: Nadim reminded us that “behind” is always relative. Behind compared to what? A public school timeline? Another homeschool family? Instead of chasing someone else’s pace, focus on progress and mastery. Even 1% improvement each day adds up.
  • On teaching math “the right way”: I confessed that math has always felt like a foreign language to me. (Numbers plus letters? No thanks!) Nadim agreed—math is a language, but it’s okay if you don’t speak it fluently. That’s why outsourcing to a program like CTCMath can free you up to encourage your child instead of stressing over how to explain algebra.

Those are just the highlights! We also dug into building a strong foundation, letting go of comparison, and how adaptive tools can help kids grow at their own pace.
