Feel like a superhero

Do you ever watch those hero movies? You know the ones that have the good vs. evil plot? The good guy wins by great willpower and strength and super powers! I love those movies. They make me feel like I can fly if I try hard enough. So then I set off to buy the soundtrack and practice my flying skills. If you are like me, you want to harness that feeling as you educate your children and keep your homes. You want to feel like a superhero as you educate your children. You want to feel strong. To harness that sense of accomplishment, purpose and pride is so appealing! I don’t know about you but I want to feel that way as I struggle to get my child to understand their math facts, as I explain for the 47th time that the “e” on the end of the word makes the vowel say its name, and as I “spot clean” the house for the 364th day this year.

Feel like a superhero

As a fairly new homeschool mom I do my best to find inspiration anywhere I can get it, encouragement in all places even if it’s a stretch. Like in great movie quotes such as: “I will overcome fear and destroy evil wherever it may hide” (The Green Lantern) I WILL overcome my fear of failure, of not doing enough, that my kids will be so far behind they will never catch up, and all the other lies I believe as I teach my kids. I WILL destroy the evil that seeks to take my children’s souls.

Recently I have also found inspiration in a powerful song You are More by Tenth Avenue North, maybe it will inspire you to fly as you overcome fear and destroy the evil that wants to destroy your families so badly. Here are a few of the lyrics to ponder:

There’s a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she’s wandered
And the shame she can’t hide …
Do you ever feel discouraged and sad on your schooling journey? Afraid of gaps in their education? Are you stuck comparing and embarrassed because the “other” homeschool mom is raising a rocket scientist when your 7 year old can’t memorize 2+2?

She says, “How did I get here?
I’m not who I once was.
And I’m crippled by the fear
That I’ve fallen too far to love” …
Ever ask yourself “What in the world am I doing homeschooling? I can barely find the time to shower anymore. Crippled by fear that your kids won’t “turn out”?

But don’t you know who you are,
What’s been done for you?
Yeah don’t you know who you are? …
SLAP! Does your cheek hurt as bad as mine?

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade …
God wants you to know today you already have all the tools you need to raise soldiers for Him. He wants you to remember you are more than “good enough” to accomplish this BIG task.

Well she tries to believe it
That she’s been given new life
But she can’t shake the feeling
That it’s not true tonight…
Often our feelings do not mirror what’s real. It’s often hard to believe inside of the noise the world tells us that we are doing the right thing. That is where faith comes in. Cling to this: Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Heb 11:1

She knows all the answers
And she’s rehearsed all the lines
And so she’ll try to do better
But then she’s too weak to try…
We often have the conviction and desire that this journey is the right journey for our families but we feel so inept, so tired, so weak some days. Lean on your support, the multitudes of families out there that are doing what you are, reach out! (Join the Hip Homeschool Moms Community.) Never forget that the Holy Spirit can be your muscle when you cannot.

But don’t you know who you are? …
Remember how important you are to Christ? He died just for YOU! He LOVES your kids, more than even you! He will honor what you are doing.

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade…
So if you didn’t get around to math today, who cares! God is bigger than a missed lesson, or a frustrated Mom. God has made you new, and He will make each day new as well!

‘Cause this is not about what you’ve done,
But what’s been done for you.
This is not about where you’ve been,
But where your brokenness brings you to …
In the end, what is the result you desire? This journey is not about you, it’s about Him. He called you here in the first place. He is going to do the work in you and in your kids that will last for generations to come.

You’ve been remade…
You are all you need to be to teach your kids. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

  3. Thank you, for this! After our morning, of only our second day of school, this is exactly what I needed to see. I also am going to put this somewhere where I can read it daily. I too know this is the right answer for our family, just need to see that in writing sometimes to feel it, when everything outside of me, even the kids sometimes are saying the opposite.

  4. I love this song and was thinking about doing a blog post about it. Love how you added stuff in the middle of the lyrics. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I wish I had known years ago that God will “make up for” areas in which I’m not proficient. I’ve homeschooled for 13 years, and for many of those years I thought I had to be the best teacher and that my kids needed to be perfect and make perfect grades and that the house needed to be perfect…….. It’s just been in the last few years that I learned that, if God called me to homeschool my kids (and He did), He will be “responsible” for the results if I will just obey Him. Besides, if we were perfect in our own power, we wouldn’t see our need for God.

  7. I looooove this song. Very inspiring. Isn’t it interesting how songs speak to us is very different ways. How they touch us in just the perfect way for our specific situation.God finds many ways to reach out to us and this song and this post is just such an example.
