Icy Fun: Frozen Words Language Arts Activity

A few weeks ago, I purchased a silicone letter mold for my kids. The molds make letter shapes and can be used for ice, cookies, food, clay, and anything else you can think to squeeze into them.

My kids came up with the idea to use the letters to make frozen words, and they had a blast making the frozen words using our letter ice pieces.

Bo, at 3, was mainly content with identifying letter names, but Monkey, at 10, wanted to make words. Since we only had one set of letters made, our words were somewhat basic, but we had a fun time making icy words and engaging in hands-on language arts fun. It was the perfect homeschooling ADHD activity for my ADHD kids!

How to Make Your Own Frozen Words:

You will need the following supplies to make ice letters:

Freeze water in the molds overnight. We put our ice molds in the freezer just before bedtime.

When the ice has hardened, gently push the letters out of the mold into the tray. If you are impatient, your letters will break.

Take the tray to a safe surface (one that won’t be damaged if it gets wet) and let the kids go wild making whatever words they can. If you make multiple sets of ice letters, your kids will have an easier time creating words.

Use these to practice sight words, vocabulary, spelling, letter names, letter sounds, and anything else you can think of! The possibilities are nearly endless.

In the end, the girls started eating the ice letters. They started with the letters that they could not make into words, but eventually, chaos erupted and they ate all the ice. Our fingers and lips were blue by the end of our lesson that day.

Still, it was one of the best language arts sessions we’ve ever had!

Ice can also become science when you learn how to make a magnifying glass.
