Celebrate Friends This Friendship Week

It’s National Friendship Week this week! What better way to celebrate friends than to invest in your friendships?

Borrowing from Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages, here are five ways to show your friends how much they mean to you.

Acts of Service:

  • Got a friend drowning in newborn laundry? Rope in some other friends and, together, arrive at her house armed with cleaning goodies and a couple of hours to blitz her house!
  • Make her and/or her family a meal and attach a “just because you’re an awesome friend and you deserve a break” message.
  • Offer to babysit her kids or have them over for a sleepover so she and her husband can enjoy a rare night out.

Words of Affirmation:

  • Write her a handwritten note and pop it in her mailbox. Tell her how much she means to you and what you’re most grateful for.
  • Gather a few of your mutual friends and ask them each to write in a “we love you” card for a special friend.  Ask them to write what they most admire about her.
  • Take her out for coffee and use the time to tell her what you most appreciate about her.

Physical Touch:

  • Give her a real long hug and say thanks for her friendship.
  • Give her a gift certificate for a back massage or…
  • Get your own fingers moving and give her a back massage or foot rub yourself!

Gifts:

  • Keep an eye out for her favorite favorites – perhaps she’s a scarf person, or a stationery person or loves reading books. Gift her with a small token of her favorite thing, just because.
  • Buy something small to be delivered to her door – there’s nothing quite like the excitement of a surprise delivery!
  • Make a photo montage of special moments from your friendship – frame it or email it to her.

Quality Time:

  • If she’s far away, block out a good hour on your calendar and hers to have a Skype date.
  • If she’s near, call her up for a park date or a coffee shop date or a sit-on-your-couch-while-the-kids-play date.
  • Spend time talking to her about her. Make an effort to ask about her thoughts and feelings on deeper subjects and listen.

These are just a few ideas of ways to celebrate your friends. Some require a bit more time, effort, or expense, but many of these ideas are worth doing regularly. Being a servant-hearted friend is the best gift you can give another person, so let’s cultivate friendships by serving well!
