Bald Eagle Nesting in the Snow

I’m not sure exactly what I expected to happen to birds and their nests when it snows, but this really surprised me!! I never expected to see a bald eagle nesting in the snow!

I have been fascinated by Explore.org’s Youtube Channel and have been constantly checking out all the different live cams. I stopped here when I saw this poor thing covered in snow!

The description on the live feed by Explore.org states: The bald eagles of the Decorah North Nest roost high in a white oak tree in a secluded valley north of Decorah, Iowa. During the nesting season the female lays 1-3 eggs and the adult pair takes turns incubating them. Hatching about 35 days later, the eagle chicks depend on both parents for food, warmth and protection until they fledge at 10-14 of age. The eagles eat both live and dead fish, squirrels, birds, rabbit, muskrat, deer, possum and anything else they can catch or find.

This eagle has three eggs she and her mate are sitting on.

Established in 1988, the non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. They create, improve, and directly maintain over 50 nests, provide training in nest site creation and management, and develop innovations in nest site viewing, bringing people closer to the natural world.

What an amazing way to study birds by using all the available live cams to help us actually see them in their natural habitats. Technology really has afforded us some amazing opportunities to study wildlife! We will continue to bring you other amazing live cams. If you are interested in seeing see all the other live cams in this series, click here.
