Skip the Romaine Lettuce from Yuma

The CDC has just announced that E. Coli has been linked to chopped romaine lettuce. So skip the Romaine Lettuce from Yuma AZ for a while! And this is unfortunate, because this is my favorite salad green!

Almost three dozen people have been infected in an E. coli outbreak from eleven different states. The outbreak has been linked to chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona region based on a notice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today. The common grower, supplier and distributor have not been identified yet, so at this point, they are suggesting we avoid any chopped lettuce from that area. Personally, I won’t be eating any romaine until this is cleared up! Their official stance is… “If you cannot confirm the source of the lettuce, do not buy or eat it.”

The people infected range in age from 12 to 84 years old. Twenty-two people have been hospitalized, including three people who have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths have been reported. Those infected are geographically spread out. Nine people were infected in Pennsylvania, eight people were infected in Idaho and seven in New Jersey.

“Individuals with this infection usually get better within about five to seven days, however some illnesses can be serious or even life-threatening,” New Jersey’s health commissioner, Dr. Shereef Elnahal, said in a statement. “Anyone experiencing symptoms of this illness should see a healthcare provider.”

It usually takes three to four days for a person who eats the E. coli germ to get sick. The typical symptoms include diarrhea (oftentimes bloody), severe stomach cramps and vomiting. People exhibiting those symptoms should get to a doctor.
