Knowonder! Review

Being a mom to four boys, I am always on the look out for educational apps that I can include in some way in our days. Media is everywhere and as much as we try to limit it, I’m finding that if we embrace it for it’s more redeeming qualities, then I feel better about allowing it into our lives. So, when I heard there was a new educational app for kids, I was really excited to check it out. I took one look at it and knew this was right in line with what we value for our kids.

Knowonder! is just the app I’ve been looking for. It’s all about literacy, fun, creativity, and reading great stories with your kids.

“Knowonder’s free mobile app delivers an original, compelling new story every day, creating an opportunity for parents to connect to their children in ways that significantly improve their children’s success. Ultimately, Knowonder’s mission is to eradicate illiteracy and improve education success through content that is affordable, accessible, and effective.”

When my eight-year-old son and I sat down to view the app, we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of content available for us to read. After scanning the short stories, we realized that there is literally a new short story available for you and your kids to read EVERY SINGLE DAY. Being a lover of good stories, this mama was thrilled!

So, we scanned the list and picked one to read. The title was intriguing and super silly . . . Salvatore Salamander’s Sensational Sack of Super Socks by Keven J. Doyle. My son LOVED it and I really enjoyed reading it to him. At the end of each story is a short list of comprehension questions for your kids . . . something we homeschooling moms can all appreciate.

Since that first story, my son has asked if we can read more. I am pleased to say that we are really enjoying each new story as they are original, creative and even reflect many of the values we uphold . . . such as good strong character traits.

This amazing app doesn’t stop here though. There are eight features in all that you can enjoy with your kids:

knowonder! stories – original fiction stories written by professional children’s writers, and sometimes even written by you!  And we give away prizes each month to the top three winners.

Talk Time – provides daily prompts and topics to help moms talk to their children ages 0-3 each and every day, literally hard-wiring their brains for learning from birth.  Read about the research that calls this the MOST important thing you can do for your child’s success in life.

Fun Facts! – a great series of non-fiction articles that explore the world around us!  Totally True Tuesday, Wild World Wednesday & Fun Facts Friday are all about the fun in discovering what’s all around us in our amazing world.

Kid Art! – featuring a new artist each and every day, the Kid Art category lets kids from around the world share their artistic talent. Each month three lucky winners are chosen, so be sure to send us your artwork!

Kid Stories! – (coming soon)  Kid Stories will feature stories written by kids (ages 0-12).  And we even give out awards each month for winners, so be sure to send us your story today!

Puzzled?! – Great word puzzles each Monday and Friday (viewable on the app, download printables from the website)

for You by You – Parenting tips, tricks and advice.  Articles and a wealth of information on everything to do with you and your kids.  And best of all, it’s true expert advice, as it comes from the world’s greatest experts . . . You!

Classics – All the great classic (public domain) stories, like Velveteen Rabbit, The Ugly Duckling, Aesop’s Fables, and more!  If you haven’t introduced your children to the great writings of the past, you owe it to them (and yourself) to discover it together!

This has become my most favorite educational app for my kids as I trust the content and am delighted that my kids all look forward to it each day. We also love that the Knowonder! creator encourages kids and parents to submit content to be used as well AND be rewarded with fun prizes and pay. So, in addition to reading great stories, my oldest son is already writing a short story to submit to the awesome folks at Knowonder!
