Quotes from Courtney Brasfield

Freedom. That’s what I was looking for [in homeschooling] my kids. The freedom to be able to give them the time they needed to develop at their own pace.
Being home with my kids, I’m able to tailor their education to what they need at their speed.

I have the freedom to teach them the truth. The freedom to teach them to think.
As somebody who spent 15 years in the public education school system, it’s an indoctrination system. I didn’t want that for my kids.
I want my kids to be able to think and stand on their own two feet and not have somebody else tell them something what they have to regurgitate.

I want them to be able to play and to move and to go outside and get sunshine. To converse with one another and other people.
When you talk about government issues…taking pieces of history, changing things just a little bit…to be able to write this narrative that kids are being taught. When you can do that to an elementary school child who is impressionable and doesn’t know the truth and doesn’t know how to dig for the truth yet, they are going to believe that. It becomes something that they absorb into their person. By the time they are in junior high and then high school and then they leave to go out into the world they don’t know any different because it’s what they’ve been taught all along.
We have a lot of well-meaning, moralistic teachers in our community but still, they have to do the things they are told to do or they’ll lose their jobs.

One of my big things is travel. When kids get to go and do and see and experience they are going to remember things better and they learn it at a deeper level.
I love the saying “I’m not a sage from the stage, but a guide by your side.”
We don’t have to feel like we know it all.
We all mess up. We all make mistakes, it’s part of learning.

We teach our children that you have to make a mistake to be able to learn; the same is true for us.
Children are resilient. They’re going to bounce back from our mistakes.
You’re going to make mistakes. It’s ok. They’re still going to turn out just fine.
Keep getting up and doing it. If you have to adjust mid course, then do it! That’s the freedom of homeschooling.
If something is not working, let it go and find something else!
