Episode 16 – Pam Barnhill Talks about The Beauty and Structure of Morning Basket Time

Homeschooling offers wonderful flexibility and freedom, but getting started each day and covering everything can be challenging and stressful. Join Trish Corlew as she interviews Pam Barnhill, author, speaker, and veteran homeschooling mom. Pam is the creator of Your Morning Basket – a program that helps homeschoolers incorporate subjects and projects that typically fall outside of the “3 Rs” but can be instrumental to making homeschooling more well-rounded, educational, and fun. If you are interested in learning how to schedule and enjoy special topics, include group activities for all of your homeschoolers, or simply add some read-aloud time to your homeschool, this episode is for you! While you’re listening, be sure to subscribe to Pam’s email list to get notified about membership plans!

Pam, a former public school teacher with a passion for journalism, believed that she could eliminate many of the undesirable aspects of public schooling and create a more positive, enriching educational environment for her family. She realized that she was spending too much of her homeschooling hours “feeling frantic and scattered, just checking off boxes.” In today’s episode, Pam relates her reasons and methods for making a positive and revolutionary change in her homeschool by creating and implementing the “morning time basket.” She gives practical advise such when and where to do morning time depending on the ages of your homeschoolers. Hint: It isn’t always in the morning and it can be almost anywhere!

Pam’s strong desire to help her children see the beauty in math, find time to learn and recite poetry, and read beautiful stories led her on this journey that so many homeschoolers have benefitted from. Her plans are designed to “reduce decision fatigue,” and to enrich your homeschool and your lives. If you thrive on freedom within structure, you must try a free month of Pam’s plans. Be sure to check out Pam’s website and books. You’ll be so glad you did!

Quotes from Pam Barnhill

Every job I ever had in my adult life stemmed from the fact that I was yearbook editor in high school. The skills I learned there did me well.

I won’t say we have loved every minute of it, but we have enjoyed most days!

[I] wanted to homeschool because I wanted my kids to learn to recite poetry and to read beautiful stories.

[Morning time] doesn’t even have to be done in the morning. It is the time of day for your entire family to come together and learn together and to give weight or importance to all of those little things that are so important to you as a homeschooler.

You can not read to your kids too much. [For younger kids] picture books are a big, huge part of morning time.

We always tell people “don’t design a nine or ten-year-old’s morning time for your five-year-old.”

So much of what we do with mathematics in our homeschool is computation only. We don’t take a lot of time to see the beautiful aspects of math.

Even young kids can really enjoy …mathematical concepts that go beyond just doing a page of addition.

As a homeschooling mom, I think decision fatigue is the biggest enemy you come up against daily in your homeschool.
