5 Helpful Essentials Oils for the Summer

With the official summer season being upon us, there are precautions we have to be mindful of as moms. Cautions such as sunburns, ticks, mosquitoes, etc.

Our skin is the biggest organ of our body, and it’s very important to be careful of what we spray on it.

Thankfully, there are healthy, natural alternatives to using toxic bug sprays for these situations without resorting to unsafe personal care products.

5 Helpful Essential Oils for the Summer

1. Peppermint

Peppermint oil is a great oil for helping sunburns. Mix 2-3 drops of peppermint oil with 1/4 cup of coconut oil or olive oil.  Apply this as often as needed. This will be very cooling and soothing to the burn!

2. Lavender

Summer heat can trigger terrible headaches. The most important thing is to be sure you and your family are staying well-hydrated. Carbonated drinks can actually dehydrate the body, so don’t think you are staying hydrated just because you are drinking something cool and refreshing. Be sure to drink actual water!

But for those times that the summer heat triggers a headache for whatever reason, lavender oil can come to the rescue!

If I have a summer headache, I first make sure I sip on water all the rest of the day in case the headache is caused by dehydration. I also use lavender oil to help ease the headache pain.

To do this, dilute the essential oil (1-2 drops of essential oil per 1 teaspoon of carrier oil–like coconut or olive oil) and apply it to the temples and across the forehead. Another way is to apply the oil undiluted on an aromatherapy necklace and wear it. Almost without fail, my headache is gone in 30 minutes!

3. Tea Tree

Tea tree oil is wonderful for easing the itch from bug bites. Plus it helps prevent infections from bites and wounds. Dilute tea tree in a carrier oil and apply to wounds and bites as needed.

4. Rose Geranium

Do you want to protect your family from tick bites, but do not want to use the common, toxic bug sprays? Have you ever used bug spray and found that it repelled some bugs but not ticks?

This has been my dilemma too. The good news is that there is an essential oil that repels ticks specifically. Ticks will not come near you if you have this oil on. It’s called rose geranium.

Geranium oil is a common oil, but you have to be sure you have the exact botanical name of rose geranium for it to be effective against ticks. Pelargonium graveolens is probably the most commonly found and used geranium essential oil, but you want to find rose geranium essential oil with the botanical name Pelargonium capitatum x radens.

Dilute this oil and apply a drop to the back of the neck, wrists, knees, and ankles. The ticks will stay far away, guaranteed! 🙂

On a side note, this oil has a very strong scent (that ticks hate) :), so if you love the smell of rose, you will especially enjoy this essential oil!

5. Citronella

If you’ve never smelled citronella essential oil, you will likely recognize the smell immediately because it is a main ingredient in bug spray. You can dilute this oil and apply it to repel mosquitoes and gnats, etc.

To make a spray instead, combine equal parts of water and witch hazel in a spray bottle, and add 30 drops of citronella oil per 8 oz. of liquid. You can also combine lemongrass with the citronella as it can work well as an insect repellent. Spray as needed.
