I used books 1 through 4 (or five) for my son. It was easy to use and didn't require anything other than a pencil. It was sometimes a little repetitive and my son would get a little bored with the same basic set if exercises that came with each lesson. But it did the job and he took off reading on his own well before we finished the full curriculum.

We love ETC! The pictures in the lesson are engaging. They types of pages repeat which helps our young readers gain confidence. We did end up purchasing some beginning phonics readers to supplement, but overall this is a complete curriculum.

Very easy to use with little prep work needed! My son did get a little tired of the repetitiveness of the program, but he learned the material very easily and quickly.

I have used this with all three of my boys with great success. They all learned to read differently but it was helpful for all three. My oldest was the earliest to read and this helped him learn to spell what he could easily read. It also was a little bit of extra practice for writing. This was an excellent supplication for my second son who needed more instruction to read. My last guy just had fun with this curriculum. Great value and useful for many types of learners. A ++++++

I used this with my daughter when she was in kindergarten to first grade. I liked how the books were inexpensive, yet still covered the material well. The only thing I can see being a problem is that the pages are in black and white and the drawings are a bit boring.

My son has enjoyed these workbooks as phonics reenforcement. The pages are black and white but he uses erasable colored pencils to brighten them up. It is a little repetitive, but I see that as a good thing.

This is a great program to start using. However, if your child isn't excelling or has difficulty with handwriting, this is not likely the best program for your family. At the very low cost, it is definitely a reasonable first step. The online activities are very similar to the book. My child found the pressure to be fast frustrating.

For struggling readers, this program will likely require significant alteration to provide a multi-sensory experience.

I really liked these books but my hands on, quick learner was bored with them. He was annoyed with the repetitiveness. However, his younger brother is doing great with them.

My kids have been using Explode the Code for years. My youngest started with the A,B,and C prep ones and loved it. She grew so confident in her phonics skills and was having fun while doing it. I would recommend this to anyone that wants simple, fun phonics lessons for kids. I do not use the Teacher Guides so there has been maybe one or two pages that I have to make up the exercises for, but it is not a huge problem.

My son enjoyed the Primer level books though they quickly became too easy for him. It built a lot of confidence for him since he was already pretty familiar with the letters and sounds, and it required enough writing of the letters to still be a challenge for him.

My kids really enjoy these and my K has breezed through multiple books this year. For us they a fun independent practice as I do not use the teacher guides.

We used the computer Explode the Code for my first grader three years ago. I felt like it was a constant test without the lessons. It would probably be an asset if used in conjunction with the books, but when used on its own it wasn't a thorough phonics curriculum.

Even though I love these books they never gave a thorough lesson in phonics. My children had to know most of the rules and had experience with sounding out of letters before attempting these lessons.

ETC is fun and easy for my son to do indpendently. We started with the first book, even though my son was in 2nd grade when we used ETC for the first time. He loves the pages that ask the questions that sometimes have silly answers. It is fun and educational!
