7 Must Read Harvest Books For Young Children

Ever since I was a child, I have always called the fall harvest season my “very favorite.” I have very nostalgic memories of my grandmother reading  books to me and taking me on long walks. I have many memories of listening to her read to me on her porch swing through the rustling of the colorful autumn leaves. One thing my grandmother instilled in me at a very early age is the importance of celebrating the very thing fall represents: the harvest.

The Night Before Thanksgiving
The Night Before Thanksgiving was given to us when our first child was born in 2001. It quickly became a keeper. It is similar to ‘Twas the night before Christmas and gives a strong focus on the importance of family. Even at the age of 12, our oldest child loves having this book read to her!

The Thanksgiving Story
The Thanksgiving Story is one of the books that my grandma Jean read to me since I can remember. This book is one of my all time favorite harvest books and a favorite of our children too. It is a beautiful depiction of the first Thanksgiving from a living history perspective. I still have the original 1954 publication that my grandma gave me as a child, and now her great-grandchildren get to enjoy it.

The Pumpkin Patch Parable

The Pumpkin Patch Parable is a charming read. This book was given to us by my aunt and uncle when our first born was just a 2-year-old (over a decade ago). This book has been a wonderful read to continually show our children the importance of listening to what God says about us – not the world. It gives them an understanding that the light of God is inside of each one of us.

  1. Thanks for this list! I’m always on the lookout for seasonally-inspired books!! I’d also like to add “The Story of Thanksgiving,” by Nancy J. Skarmeas; my 2 year-old loves it (it would also make a great book for a beginner reader too)!
