Raising my children to be patriotic and to have a love for our country, is very important to me.  I want them to fully understand and cherish the freedoms we have here in America – not just take them for granted.  But when do you start really covering all of this?  At what age?  I’ve looked around and every thing seems to be geared for third grade and up.

Well, thankfully for my first grader, Amelia Hamilton wrote One Nation Under God – A Book for Little Patriots.  This beautifully illustrated, poetically written book is perfect for our little ones.  I absolutely LOVE how Amelia associates numbers with each new topic of our government: 1 Nation Under God, 2 Chambers in Congress, 3 Branches of Government, etc.  She makes it so easy for the younger kiddies to grasp and remember such big and important information about our country (okay easy for Mama too).

My daughter, 6 years old, loved the rhythm of the poetry.  She was immediately trying to sing it through while I read to her (and of course put a little dance to it).  In fact, because of how my daughter took to it, I have already decided we will be taking section by section and memorizing it through out our school year.  What a fun and easy way for a 6 year old to learn about the branches of our government, judicial system and the Bill of Rights!  I think we may even need to have a little recital!!!

This book is a fabulous resource for all families, not just for those of us who homeschool.  Whether you incorporate it into your school days or read through it on our countries many Patriotic Holidays, One Nation Under God – A Book for Little Patriots, is a must for every one’s family library!

  1. I too have a first grader and it was so hard to choose his ‘social studies’ this year. I also noticed that curricula seems to be geared to third graders. We settled on a history program, but we’re majorly lacking in all things ‘America’. This book would seem to be the answer. …seems popular – I’ve heard a lot about it lately!

  2. Raising our children to be patriotic is very important in our home, as well. My husband is in the Army and has been to war (he was there when our daughter was born) and we want our children to understand what truly loving their country is all about. This book sounds wonderful! What a great addition it would be to our history curriculum.

    Many blessings,
    Lisa

  3. Thank you for the opportunity to win this book but also for the review. My oldest son has been a patriot since he could walk. I have pictures of him dressed with Colonial, Civil War, etc costumes. And, now as a 14 yr old, his dream is to attend the Naval Academy and become a Navy Seal. The “mom” part of me is a bit fearful; but the “Patriot” in me is thrilled!

  4. Thank you so much for the book review. I am always looking for really great books to help my children not only learn but to become interested in the subject and have fun while learning.

    Blessings,
    Karen

  5. We would LOVE this! I’ve been introducing the constitution to my son and he loves libertys kids. This looks like something he would actually enjoy quite a bit.

  6. This looks great! I’m interested! Our family guideline is love of God, Love of Family and Love of Country. These are the 3 most important things!

  10. I have this book on my boys’ wishlist. It has been recommended to me by a number of people. It looks like a great book for the kids to learn and retain information. We would love to add this book to our home library.

  11. We would love ti have this book. My kids and Pre K and K and I want so badly to teach them about America the way I was taught… not in the politically correct ways of today. I come from a political background and already instill in my kids a strong sense of God and Country. There is nothing cuter than my kids actually wating a GOP Debate and looking interested…. although last night during the candidates forum, I said “Molly are you a Republican or Democrat” and she said “I am a Molly”…. it was cute. I don’t twiiter but I will share this on FB right now 🙂

  12. We will be studying American History next….this would be sooo great for my little ones (5 and 8)!

  13. This would be a great book to use across the spectrum and a great introductory into learning about our country and government! My son would love this book, thanks for the chance!

  14. It’s nothing new but should be stressed to the youngest among us that God and country go together. To be patriotic in America should also mean to value our Christian heritage. This book sounds like a wonderful way to reach even the youngest to treasure our greatest American ideals and principles that bring freedom to the most people. Very creative and fun way to introduce important concepts to the very young.

  15. This sounds perfect! I’d appreciate it very much to win this book. Blessings to you and your family!

  20. I would love to win this book. My daughter is 7 and this is our first year homeschooling. I am kind of nuts for anything I can try new! Great review of the book and if I don’t get it I will for sure have to go buy it soon! God Bless!

  21. If I don’t win this book I will buy it because I want my grandchildren Alyssa age 9 and Aiden age 6 to understand that this nation is the exception to the rule of world history. I can’t be with them every day because they live on the west coast and I live on the east coast, but when we talk and visit I try to instill in them American and Christian ideals and values. I think this book with it’s simple but profound format would stick in their minds and provide a basis for understanding constitutional government that is so essential to our personal liberty. Thank you!
