I do recommend these books to use as a supplement to your math program. They are great for extra practice when a child is struggling with a concept. In our case, it was multiplication. These books helped my child get way better at multiplication, and helped make her more confident also.

We are using Teaching Textbooks for my daughter who is 8 but at a 3rd-4th grade level. When she reached multiplication in treating textbooks we stopped and picked up the Kumon multiplication workbook. We worked on it until she finished every page. I was amazed at how quickly she picked up on it and how fast she learned all of her multiplication problems! I will be honest and admit that I am now better at my multiplication too. We have jumped back into Teaching Textbooks and she flies through the multiplication problems without the use of her fingers.

These books are only sufficient for drill practice of concepts already learned elsewhere in our experience. The teaching was non-existent or just showed you how to operate the problem. It does explain why that method produces the right answer. Kids that just memorize HOW to do the math without actually understanding how it works will forget that how in time. Kids that know that concept inside out and backwards may also forget the actual how in time just as well, but since they know WHY it worked that way, they'll have the tools to sort it out on their own. A kid who only memorized the method and forgot it later is up a creek.

Pros
Inexpensive, good drill review
Cons
They don't actually teach the concepts.
Do you recommend?
Only if you're just looking for drill practice.

These are practice workbooks with explanations. The explanations are sometimes terse, and sometimes only easy to understand if you're an adult familiar with the terms and with the math (so that you can then explain to the child, what the written explanation actually means). For instance, in the 4th Grade Geometry and Measurement workbook I have, on one fractions worksheet, the "Don't Forget!" box has the following:

"When comparing two fractions with the same denominator, the fraction with a larger numerator is the larger number. When comparing two fractions with the same numerator, the fraction with the smaller denominator is the larger number."

A person who has already mastered fractions, may still have trouble following that, or keeping it straight, from that verbiage. It is correct, but it does not easily convey meaning. There are no pictures to illustrate how that works. I seriously doubt those two sentences would help most 4th-graders understand much about fractions, unless their method of learning is just to produce a correct answer through accurate execution of memorized rules. Any conceptual grasp will have to be provided through real teaching by someone. For that reason, this is not in my estimation, a good stand-alone curriculum, but rather, a practice workbook with explanations that function more as reminders or else teaching notes to elaborate on.

Pros
Inexpensive, readily available in many bookstores, have explanations in the workbook
Cons
Explanations are generally procedural rather than deeply conceptual; explanations are worded in a way that may make no sense except to adults who already understand the material. You will have to paraphrase and explain, to a younger kid.
Do you recommend?
For use as a practice workbook or refresher course, yes. Not for a full teaching curriculum.

I bought all Kumon books for my Grade 1 a while back. The books are easy to use and to grasp what is expected of the student. It's colourful which my kiddos love.
I was just sad that I couldn't use Kumon as a complete curriculum package. I felt it didn't quite pinpoint on all aspects I wanted my kiddos to learn for the given time period.
I have queried this matter and Kumon South Africa told me I should let my kids participate in the actual Kumon extra classes, because the books only represent a small percentage of what is covered.
With all this said, I still supplement our curriculum with Kumon now and then especially for my girl who loves using these books!

These are simple and affordable workbooks that do teach. We have three and she has finished one (counting 1-120). Pages are simple and not distracting, she can work independently for a few minutes which gives her pride. There is enough repeat to learn info but not get boring for most part. A child who does not write or struggles with writing may not enjoy since they are writing numbers over and over to learn them. We have started Telling Time and she was telling the "o'clocks" within 5 minutes.
