Yummy Family Traditions

Like most families I’m sure, we have so many wonderful traditions during the Holiday’s, it can be difficult to say which one is our favorite.  Okay, that’s not true at all!  By far, baking Christmas Cookies is my favorite (and by all the constant request, I feel safe in saying it’s my families favorite as well).

We have a list of 5 MUST HAVE COOKIES every year and then may throw in one or two more, depending on our schedule.  The Hykes Family Top Five Christmas cookies are:  Chow Mein Candy Clusters, Butter Balls, Peanut Butter Kiss Cookies, Frosted Ricotta Cookies, and of course Cut Out Cookies!

The number one request/demand (yes some times the request can sound more like a demand) are the Chow Mein Candy Clusters.  Now that my daughter is getting older she is more than happy to assist (or take over) in the making of these cookies and I am more than happy to let her.

These are so super easy to make and your kiddos (no matter what age) will love to help you.  The best part is cleaning up – mmmm licking the bowl and spoon!

So I thought I would share this recipe with you!  Even if you don’t like Butterscotch you must try them.  My hubby hates butterscotch and he LOVES these cookies.  Just try them once – you’ll see!

** WARNING – These cookies are highly addictive! **

Chow Mein Candy Clusters

12oz. pkg of Chocolate Chips (I love Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet)

12oz. pkg of Butterscotch Chips

6oz.   Can of Chow Mein Noodles

1/2C  of Peanuts

1/2C  of Raisins

All you need to do is combine your chocolate chips and butterscotch chips in a large pot and melt (on low heat) on your stove top.  Make sure you stir constantly so you don’t burn your chips.  Also, I like to use a spatula for this so I don’t leave any chocolate stuck to the pot.

Remove it from the heat and stir in the remainder of your ingredients.  I usually start with the peanuts and raisins and then add in the chow mein noodles.  It just seems to be easier that way.  Oh, and if you don’t like raisins just add in more peanuts!

Then, have your kiddos take spoonfuls and drop them on to wax paper (or plastic wrap if you’re like me and keep forgetting to purchase more wax paper).

Now the hard part comes – waiting for them to cool and harden!

I can not remember a Christmas with out these cookies at my family get togethers.  Seriously, you would have had some very upset family members and the Christmas Party may have been ruinned if some one didn’t make them.  My hubby even caught my daughter sneaking bites off of 5 different cookies and hiding them back in our cookie jar.  Ya, those are now just for our family!

Pour yourself a glass of milk and enjoy!!!
I hope you and your family enjoy this recipe as much as mine!

  1. YUM – these look so festive and anything with chocolate is a hit in my house! This recipe is unique and looks like fun! My family loves to bake during the holidays and give lots of cookie gifts. The biggest challenge in our family with growing kids (almost 11, 9 and 4 years old) is making sure we have enough to give away after everyone’s had a few of their favorites and suck a few too. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Every year the must haves are eggnog cookies, just posted the recipe on my blog, and coconut macaroons. We love trying new recipes and if I had the ingredients on hand I would be whipping this one up. We also do homemade pumpkin pie and in the past have made Paula Dean’s Pumpkin Roll which is a little time consuming, but so worth it. Thanks for sharing, love the holidays!!
