“Sweet Chicks” Easter Snack
Chicks represent new life. They are baby chickens. And since we all receive new life in Christ, this is a good tie-in with Easter. It is a bit messy! But you can make these cute chicks yourself as a special treat to serve on Easter, or use it on Palm Sunday to help children look forward to Easter.
• Shredded coconut
• Green food coloring
• Yellow food coloring (if necessary)
• One cupcake, any flavor
• White frosting tinted with green food coloring
• Two doughnut holes
• Yellow frosting (if yellow is not available use white with yellow food coloring)
• One orange gumdrop and two black gumdrops (or black gel “writing” icing)
• Plastic knife
• Plastic spoon
The chicken and the egg have been a symbol of Easter for hundreds of years. They represent a “new” beginning. The crucifixion and resurrection of Christ reminds us that out of sorrow often comes great joy and that our faith in His goodness brings us into new life with Him. Let’s make chicks and think of our new life in Christ…
1. To color the coconut green, place it in a plastic bag and add green food coloring. Shake the bag until all the coconut is green, adding additional food coloring if needed. A little water may help the green food coloring spread easier. Pat coconut dry with a paper towel if necessary.
2. Use the plastic knife to cut off the top of the cupcake and the spoon to make a well in the cupcake.
3. Place the green coconut into the cupcake.
4. Use plastic knife to slice a little bit off the bottoms of the doughnut holes so that they are flat.
5. Place one doughnut hole atop the coconut and use a toothpick to hold it in place.
6. Place the second doughnut hole atop the first one and use another toothpick to hold it in place.
7. Cover both doughnut holes with yellow frosting.
8. Use an orange gumdrop for the beak and two black gumdrops (or black writing gel) for the eyes. The black gumdrops may have to be trimmed a bit to make them smaller.
