Turn Your Garage into a Homeschool Room!

When Molly Ferrie started homeschooling her children a couple of years ago, she knew she wanted a dedicated homeschool room. Some moms (like me!) enjoy doing school in the living room piled up on the couch or even outside on a blanket in the yard on nice days. Some moms, though, dream of having a room just for homeschooling. They enjoy decorating the room, having a place to keep all of their books and supplies, and being able to shut the door at the end of the school day and not have to deal with books and projects strewn all over the house!

Molly has always loved DIY projects, but she also knew that all of the rooms in her home were occupied. There was simply not a room available to use for a homeschool room. But one day she realized she could, with the help of her husband, turn the garage into a homeschool room. But what if they ever decided to move and the new owners wanted to use the garage as a garage again? No problem! The changes they made allow for the space to be turned back into a garage if they should ever decide to do that. How on earth did Molly and her husband accomplish this task? Keep reading to find out!

First, because Molly and her family live in hot and humid Tennessee, they knew they needed to have air conditioning in the room. Take a look at the YouTube video at the bottom of this article to see how they handled installing a portable air conditioner in a room without windows! (The portable air conditioner, seen in the photo above on the left, also serves as a heater during the winter.)

Next, they knew they needed to stay on a budget. For that reason, they used paint and decor that was left over from their home, and they looked for ceiling fans and other odds and ends on Facebook Marketplace. You could also check with local homeschool families, at rummage sales, at secondhand shops in your area, and even with friends and family members to find out if anybody has furniture, rugs, shelves, or other supplies and furniture they might want to get rid of that would be useful to you.

What They Bought

They used cement floor paint on the floors, and it really gave the room a much more “polished” look! They used BEHR Premium Slate Gray Self Priming Garage Floor Paint.

The desk they used is a quick bench folding wall mounted workbench like this one. It even folds down for times when you need the space and aren’t using the desk!

How They Installed Air Heat & Air

If you’re enclosing a garage that doesn’t have a window but you still need air conditioning in your new school room, take a look at the YouTube video below! It will walk you through the steps for installing a portable air conditioner in your room even if there’s no window!

  1. Wow that is so creative!! My husband keeps saying one day I’ll have to use our garage as a craft room… I guess it’s not such a bad idea!

I think I’m the kind of mom who wishes she has a huge homeschool room too, although we also like to sit outside on a blanket occasionally!
