Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen

The movie Frozen is whimsical, sweet, and good-natured with amazing music. While the movie is nice and I have to give it credit for inspiring us to read The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, it is a shadow of the book at best. While the movie is more romantic, still keeping the theme of sacrifice, the original story is very Christian. It would be a fun study to get both the book and the movie and do a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the two. Andersen’s language is so beautiful and precious- almost holy. His imagery touches the heart and “warms the soul.” Anyone who has loved someone who has been lost and would go to any length to rescue that person will understand the very crux of The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.

We loved this story of redemption so very much. It brings to life new hope that any soul corrupted and gone cold can be warmed by love and once again gain clear sight. For a more in depth summary read A Cozy and Cautionary Winter Fairy Tale.
