I used this with two young children and they loved it! We traveled all over the country. Once of the recommendations in the book was to receive free visitor guides from each state. My kids loved seeing the differences between states across the country. Not all activities in the book worked for us, which is why I had to do some more prep work, but it was a great resource none-the-less.
It is a nice unit study of the United States. There is prep work for the parent. I do like that they put all of the activity pages on CD in PDF format so you can just print the pages off instead of having to make copies. They also have a bonus section on the CD with journal pages. The only thing that they didn't include on the CD that I wish they did were the additional pages in the Appendix in the book. It is only 7 pages so it is not too big of a deal.
There are a few resources that they do recommend purchasing but not required to use Cantering the Country. I am planning on using this along side of some state lapbook kits that I have purchased to teach my young children.
My kids learned a great deal while having tons of fun. We plan on doing it again this year in preparation for a cross country trip next year and will add in some fun lap books.
My daughter enjoyed this this year as she is a hands on learning and likes all the activity; however, I wish there was a way to include memory work for each state, capital and major geographical landmarks.
