This was used as a one semester science course for my sixth grader. He really enjoyed the projects and all of the information presented. He did the projects for both the younger and older students. I would recommend that you do have your student narrate the information to you after reading it. This truly cements the information in their minds. I required him to narrate very specific scientific terms, definitions, and concepts.

We have used Apologia science in our homeschool for several years. The books each cover only one topic and are written in a very chatty style. I find the books to be very wordy. Also, since only one topic is covered in each book, my children get tired of that topic by the end of the year.
The books are Christian-based and have information about creation and finding evidence of a Creator through the study of science.
Overall, my children enjoy reading through the books and looking at the pictures. However, we find the amount of information about each topic to be very overwhelming. My children retain very little of what we read in the books. This is why we use the books as a read aloud and not as our main science curriculum.
I really think these books are best when used with an older elementary-aged child due to the large amount of information in the books.

This is also a good precurser to sex ed as it talks about male and female parts of flowers and fertilizing the seed. Once they realize a male and female part in a flower is needed, I think it is an open way to explain human babies being made.

I highly recommend Exploring Creation with Botany.
Although I think it would be a little over my Kindergartener's head, it seems good for 2nd grade on to me.

We love Apologia Science. The way they cover depth of the subject and still bring the connections down to a child's level is amazing. We also really enjoy the hands on activities that tie in with the lessons.

We love Apologia! We just finished
Botany this past spring. It is very detailed, but easy enough for my 3rd grader to grasp & still exciting for my 5th grader. This is our 4th season with Apologia. My kids retain so much from these books. It amazes me how many facts they still talk about even from the first book.

I have been looking forward to using this again with my younger kids, because it is of my favorites. Not only did the students understand and retain the content, the experiences we shared from using this book as a springboard, made some great family memories. We made our own notebook pages, grew and observed plants of all sorts, found some wonderful field opportunities, and were inspired to try new things. Content is rich for older elem. kids, while the nearness and accessibility of the plant world makes it authentic for the younger crowd.

I think that you learn a lot from this book. The only downfall is that my kids did find it slightly boring. Hoping to try again when they are older. Needs to be more hands on.

This was a great year for us!!! The kids loved learning all about plants and I learned a ton with them! It wasn't too difficult, yet it didn't speak down to them either.

Pros
I love the content and the curriculum set up.
Cons
I ordered the journal and the lap-books. Doing both is far too much work and the cost is high. The journal alone is nice, we have the jr. edition, though I think it is a waste to have printing and cursive pages.
